2 Technology Sites Teachers should Know

This posting discusses 2 technology-based organizations that teachers and teacher candidates need to know for their professional development in education: International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Oklahoma Technology Association (OTA).

(1) International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)

The ISTE is an association with people who are interested in technology and education in the world. Educators can be benefited from the site in terms of being updated with current trends, networking with various members, acquiring articles for free, taking professional webinars, taking related podcasts, and receiving discounts on using resources that charge you to use. For example, the association has 19,263 members (based on 2012-2013 annual report) that consists of 1,827 international members and 55 corporate members. Also, there are three journals such as Journal of Research on Technology in Education, Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education, and Journal for Computing Teachers. The members can read all of the articles for free. In addition, they have webinars or conferences at least once a month. Those factors will guide you to the current trends and ideas in the field. On the other hand, challenges could be that you need to pay for the membership and taking the webinar. The ISTE charges you for a membership ranging from $49 to $304, and the fee to take the webinars varies from $29 to $235. However, I believe the amount that you spend is a good investment for the valuable information. Therefore, how about taking a look at the site (https://www.iste.org/) and looking for resources beneficial for your classes?

(2) Oklahoma Technology Association (OTA)

As ISTE can give you global perspectives about the technology in education, Oklahoma Technology Association (OTA) will give you more focused resources and ideas for your local needs in Oklahoma school districts. Teachers can benefit from the six factors of the organization: in-person assistance, cadre of expertise, annual conference, webinar, networking with local teachers, and news letters. First, since its headquarter is located in the city of Yukon, Oklahoma, you can get help in person by visiting the office. Also, the annual conference will give you keen insights in the field (I have participated in the conference this year, it was amazing!) Moreover, the organization provides you with a Cadre of Expertise on their website so you can easily contact experts for specific needs. In addition, you can participate in the webinars and build a network with local teachers as well. Lastly, its news letter is regularly published in which abundant up-to-date topics (e.g. gamifying) are discussed. However, one challenge would be that you need to pay the membership fee to join ranging from $75 to $300. Nonetheless, the amount you spend is also a good investment while considering the benefits from the organization. Therefore, I strongly recommend that teachers in Oklahoma visit the homepage (http://www.oktech.org/) and play around with the information there.
